The First Drayton Game Was A Drag....

Headed to the south for the latest game of our scheduling on the night before the first of high school exams was a less satisfying experience than we hoped.  But this is only the first game....Final to them 5 to 9.

The IceDogs made the trek to Drayton to begin the best of six series.  Missing from the rank and file were Clay, still recovering from a break in his shoulder and Jason R, with a concussion compliments of last game.   The game started with an early Drayton goal but the Dogs weren't far behind, with a great two on one play by Hanna and Faust to tie it up.  Brad took a twisting hit and this reporter had to leave the stands to find the ice pack.  Luckily, Roving Reporter Rick was there to write down all the Drayton goals I missed and when I returned to the stands, someone had drank my pop and the score was 5 to 1!  And the first was over!

The Dogs attempted to take control at the start of the second.  At 14:24, Mason made a nice pass from behind the net to Faust, who placed the puck in the top corner.  5 to 2.  Then VanVeen got the puck over to the Matrix, who slid it along the ice to make it 5 to 3 at 13:38.  However, Drayton wasn't going to let this renewed energy go unanswered.  They quickly got two themselves.  Drayton also pulled a couple of penalties but the Dogs couldn't make anything work.  Period ended at 7 to 3.

Dogs don't quit. Drayton got their eighth early in the third but Lawson was doing everything in his power to keep the Dogs in it.  He made an awesome glove save at 10:53 and a great dive at 8:58  Finally, Faust would get number 4 for the team and a hattrick for himself at 7:08 with the assistance of his linemates.  But darn it!  Drayton got another.  Then Brandon got in the trolley tracks and was down.  That may have inspired Taylor to use the big hammer on a Drayton forward.  At 3:20, Faust skated in and got Dogs number 5.  Drayton would get one more penalty (almost as many of those as goals!) for the final two minutes and despite an excellent effort, the score remained at 9 to 5.  But Dogs don't quit.

And guess who we will be seeing again tonight....
