Icedogs vs Lakers Black in Game Two of Playoffs
The U13A squad hosted the undefeated Shallow Lake Lakers Black team.
These two teams were closely matched in the regular season, and with a loss already in the Icedogs record, this was a must win to keep the playoff hopes alive.
Well, the Icedogs did not disappoint. The first period saw the Icedogs take control of the Shallow Lake zone and had plenty of close chances. The Lakers did manage a few chances on their own but the Icedog defenders kept the threats to a minimum.
With the period almost over, a speedy Liam M, cut in fast around the Lakers defence and fired home a beauty with just a minute left in the period. The Icedogs would head into the second with a 1-0 lead and due to a late penalty, short handed with Kesler W in the box.
Shallow Lake would pressure the Icedogs, but some great penalty killing kept the Lakers to outside and out of the zone. The Lakers would finally answer with a goal of their own at the 10 minute mark, taking advantage of a couple Icedogs that were out of positon and perhaps a touch of puck watching.
The Refs whistle would be brought out quickly and twice within seconds and the Icedogs found themselves short handed by two. Again some great penalty killing and just after the 1st penalty was gone, some great forechecking lead to Hunter G planting a shorty past the Lakers goalie to put the Icedogs up 2-1 with 5 mins left in the period.
The penalty box door was opened again for Brandon N for a tripping call and the Icedogs fought off another penalty to end the period.
The energy was high as the Icedogs headed to the dressing room for the flood after the 2nd period. Spirits were up and the players knew they were having a great game. Not much needed to be said and they were keen to head out to battle on in the 3rd.
The pressure from the Icedogs continued with ample time in the Lakers zone again. The clocked ticked away and Cole F was spectacular kicking aside any attempts thrown his way. With just over 5 mins to play, the Lakers started to get frustrated and finally a power play for the Icedogs. It wouldnt take long for Cole W to pick the puck up from Cole F head end to end, set up in the Lakers zone and fire a missle that was tipped in neatly by Hunter G.
The Lakers would find their way to the box again with under 2 mins left in the game, and the Icedogs took advantage of the power play to allow the clock to click down to the buzzer.
Another gritty and hard fought game by the Icedogs and great efforts from every single player.
Up next the Icedogs continue to claw their way back to the top with a game against the Lakers Yellow Squad, Saturday in Shallow Lake.
