U13A Icedogs Compete in Doug Perkes Memorial Tournament
The U13A Icedogs, ventured south to compete in a 3 day tournament in Seaforth. A great opportunity to play some different teams outside of our normal schedule.
Friday started out with a mid day game vs the Arthur Vipers.
It was officially a snow day back home and the Icedogs started out a bit slow but eventually found their pace.
The first period was scoreless on both sides and the Icedogs finally opened up the scoring with a goal from Seth H with assists going to Avelyn S and Liam M
Hunter G would get one of his own with a helper from Ben H, with only 30 seconds left in the second.
The Icedog goals kept coming in the 3rd with goals from Liam M, Hunter G and Gabe S. Assists were credited to Ben, Mav, Avelyn and Seth.
Cole F would earn the shutout with a final score 5-0.
Game two of the day was over in Hensall and this was a rematch with the Huron Bruce Blizzard.
The first period had Cole W pocketing two goals of his own, just seconds apart with Hunter G assisting on both goals.
Not to be outdone in the second period, Liam M tallied two goals of his own with assists going to Cole W and Brandon N
There was a single goal by the Icedogs in third with a goal for Seth H, assisted by Avelyn S.
The Icedogs kept Huron Bruce off the scoreboard (5-0) giving Cole F his second shut out of the tournament.
Cookies were shared amongst the team after the game by Brandon N who assured us he spent hours, elbow deep in flour preparing wonderful treats for the team. A greatly appreciated treat for all after a great game.
Saturday would only have one game for the Icedogs to play and the results would determine the final standings for the semi finals on Sunday.
The Icedogs faced off against the Thamesford Attack.
It only took seconds for Cole W to commence the scoring with an end to end rush and a beauty deke.
Both teams were kept off the score sheet for the rest of the period.
The second period brought more goals the Icedog's way with a solo goal from Seth H and a goal mouth goal to Harley M, assisted by Ben H.
The 3rd period got rolling and the Icedogs would get many chances but couldn't find the twine. The Icedogs would finally get a chance on the power play and Cole W would strike again.
Just a minute later, Seth H would bury one of his own. Final Score (yet again, Icedogs 5, Attack 0.
Finishing just under the top two teams, the Icedogs were lined up to play Mitchell in the semi finals on Sunday at 1pm.
Yet another team the Icedogs had never faced before. A win here and the Icedogs would be on their way to the finals later in the day. Mitchell, however, had other ideas.
The Meteors came out of the gate swinging and the Icedogs found themselves battling through the first period trying to figure out their worthy opponent. A few good chances by the Meteors were thwarted by Cole F and the period ended in 0-0 draw,
The second period got under way and a bad scramble in front of the Icedogs net, gave Mitchell their first goal of the game. The Icedogs clawed their way many times into the Meteors end and had some close chances that were ever so close.
Hard forchecking lead to an early 3rd period power play for the Icedogs. While on the power play, a misplay at the Meteors blue line, lead to a Mitchell breakaway, leading to their second goal of the game.
The Icedogs would regroup and with seconds still left on the power play, Cole W would put the Icedogs on the board with a helper from Liam M.
The Icedogs would get more chances to even things up, but yet again, could not capitalize. There were many close chances and the Icedogs fought off any attempts by the Meteors.
With 5 minutes left in the 3rd, the Icedogs would get into their own penalty trouble, giving Mitchell a power play late in the game. It would not take Mitchel long to go ahead 3-1.
The Icedogs didn't give up. With Cole F on the bench and the extra attacker, Hunter G got the Icedogs within a goal with just over a minute left to play.
The seconds ticked away as the Icedogs did everything they could to try and gain the Meteor zone, but in the end, the win went to our opponent. A game that could have gone either way.
So to recap the weekend, a great tournament and a great showing for the Icedogs U13A team. Overall there were some great efforts by all the players and some stood out and showed us all some of their best games of the season. No you can't win them all but every player should be proud they left it all out on the ice.
Now it is time to get back to our regular season to keep that undefeated streak going. Up next is our fellow Icedogs U13B, Wednesday night, 7pm in Paisley.
