Icedogs edge out Walkerton in a Nail Biter.
The U13A Icedogs kept everyone on the edge of their seats as they faced off against Walkerton Capitals U13 #1 team.
Sitting on the top of the standings, has a target on the Icedogs backs. Their opponent Wednesday night in Tara was the Walkerton Capitals #1 squad. Walkerton was keen to give the Icedogs their first loss of the season.
This unknown opponent was not going to go down without a fight. Goals were going to be few and far between and the Icedogs needed to shed some of the bad habits that may have carried over from the last game.
It didn't take the Icedogs long to strike first and Cole W beat the Caps tender as he stepped in with a pass from Jaxson T with just a minute off the clock.
The rest of the period would be a struggle to break out of our own end and make meaningful passes. We did have our chances, but minimal results. Passes were off point or put into the feet of the opponent in front of the net. Rebounds were left unattended and Walkerton were aggressive in our own end. Cole F made some amazing saves to keep us up by one heading into the second.
There may have been a misunderstanding when the coaches pressed the team to have more "active" sticks. Harley M gave on of the Caps players a firm stick hug and was sent to the sin bin just 30 seconds into the 2nd. Walkerton would take make short work of the power play and evened up the score just a minute into the power play.
There were no more goals in the period even with the Icedogs on the Power play for the last two minutes, heading into the flood.
After the 10 minute break, Hunter G would strike quickly on a rush and put the Icedogs up again by one.
Walkerton would answer back again a minute later, with one of their own to knot things up again at 2 a piece.
Both teams had their chances to pull ahead and the Icedogs started to find their rhythm. With the seconds ticking away and less than a minute on the clock, Walkerton stepped in on a partial break and Cole F flashed the leather and took away a sure goal.
After the face off the play would go back and forth but the Icedogs managed to pin the caps in their own end. On a last second change, Cole W took off towards the scrum in front of the Walkerton net. The puck magically squeezed out to the streaking Cole W who rifled it, post in, to clinch the victory with only 4 seconds left on the clock.
A close win for the Icedogs that kept the fans on the edge of their seats for the whole game.
A couple needed practices coming up for the Dogs, before our next game vs Shallow Lake on the 18th, who are sitting with your Icedogs on the top of the standings.
