Dog Tired Atom Girls Bring Home A Win In Brussels
It was a bleary eyed and scraggly tailed pack of dogs that wandered into the Brussels arena early Saturday morning. But it takes more than an early wake up call to keep these dogs down. It didn't take long for them to wake up and bring home a 3-2 win.
The first period went by fast. Both teams skating hard, goaltender Ashlynn S. making some great saves then at the halfway mark Brussels/Blyth put the first goal on the scoreboard.
The offensive lines for the IceDogs had plenty of scoring opportunities but nothing solid until 2 minutes into the second period when the dynamic began to shift as the Blyth/Brussels team began to tire with only 8 skaters to play. aydn W. finally broke away from the pack and put one in bringing the score to 1-1. Despite the tiring opposition the remainder of the second period was an uphill battle for the IceDogs.
Period 3 belonged solely to the IceDogs. Both teams were feeling the effects of the early morning and a hard played game. Jaydn W. snuck through the defense one more time to bring the IceDogs ahead. Annie M. showed her aggressive "bruiser" side drawing a body contact penalty. The IceDogs battled their way through the next two minutes holding the Bulldogs at Bay. With just under 3 minutes remaining Pina C. tipped it in, assisted by Annie M and Zoe S. Less than a minute later Brussels/Blyth found the momentum to put another one through. With the score 3-2 Brussels/Blyth kicked it up again, pushing hard against the IceDogs defense. As the period wound down the Bulldogs pulled their goaltender, however the IceDogs were too busy trying to get the puck back out of their end to notice. It wasn't enough, the IceDogs and Ashlynn S. stopped everything the Bulldogs threw at them.
